Composing Systems: From Spectral Immanence to Post-Techno Ecologies.
A Lecture by Hugo Paquete, PhD | Sonic Media Artist | INET-md, University of Aveiro at  IKD Serie Ausgewählte Kapitel Neuer Musik!   ABU Sonic Lab . Anton Bruckner Private University, 2026

What if sound were not something we hear, but something we think with?

Sonic media artist Hugo Paquete invites us to reconsider sound as a critical technology—a tool for philosophical inquiry, a mode of resistance, and a blueprint for post-human futures. Tracing two decades of practice from post-digital critique to his current research on AI and machinic agency, Paquete introduces his framework of post-techno aesthetics: a radical rupture with electronic music conventions that leverages rhythm, repetition, and automation not for hypnosis, but for systemic critique.

Drawing from his CEEC-FCT research contract at INET-md, University of Aveiro, and the project "AI as Catalyst: Transformative Impacts on Digital Performance, Computer Music, and Cultural Creativity" (FCT), Paquete presents his work on cybernetic ecologies. Developed through artistic residencies at ZKM (Germany) and as director of Absonus Lab (Portugal) , these immersive sound worlds emerge from the intra-action of human performers, live data streams (from biometrics to orbital satellites), and generative algorithms.

The lecture poses a fundamental question for our time: How can we compose with systems to critique the technological unconscious and propose new models for existing in an algorithmically-dominated world?

For composers, Paquete offers new methodologies for human-machine collaboration. For media artists, a theoretical grounding for post-techno practice. For all audiences, an invitation to listen differently—to hear, in the noise of collapse, the signal of the real.

O Ruído do Real: Estéticas Pós-Techno e a Crítica do Inconsciente Tecnológico.

Performing "Atmospheric Metabolism" at Periphera Festival 2025

Our breath is the first interface. In Atmospheric Metabolism, it becomes the primary instrument in a concert for a breathing world.

I am thrilled to announce that I will be presenting this work as part of the Periphera Festival 2025 - Digital Art Festival of Trafaria.

This performance creates a living, metabolic system between body and technology. I use hyper-instruments to translate the CO₂ from the performance space, my voice, and my breath into a generative composition of sound and light. But this is not a solo; it is a collective composition.

You complete the circuit.

The CO₂ from the breath of every person in the room becomes a core parameter of the system. Your collective exhalations are the data that shapes the evolving soundscape. You are not just witnessing the music; you are co-composing it in real-time through the most fundamental biological process. The piece moves through stages of potential, friction, and saturation, driven directly by the audience's metabolic activity.

Atmospheric Metabolism is a ritual for the Anthropocene, making our shared responsibility for the climate a visceral, audible, and collective experience.

Thank you for becoming part of the composition.

Performance Date: November 14, 2025
Festival: Periphera Festival

This performance is part of a diverse program of exhibitions, talks, and workshops exploring the intersection of art and technology.

Hugo Paquete to Present Research on AI and Post-Techno at the "Urgencies" Sound and New Media Art Conference

I am pleased to announce that my research paper, "Maximum Sound, Meta-Opera: Human-Machine Co-Agency and Post-Techno Aesthetics in the Age of AI," has been accepted for presentation at the upcoming international Explorations on Sound and New Media Art Conference. The event, themed "Urgencies," is organized by the CITAR Research Center and will take place from November 5–7, 2025, at the Auditório Ilídio Pinho in Porto.

My presentation is scheduled for Panel Sessions 4 on November 6, chaired by André Baltazar. The paper delves into the intersection of algorithmic composition, artificial intelligence, and contemporary music aesthetics. It explores the concept of a "meta-opera" where human and machine agencies collaborate, using a post-techno sensibility to interrogate new forms of sonic creation and the politics embedded within automated systems.

This year's conference gathers leading artists and thinkers to address pressing global issues, from environmental crises to geopolitical conflicts, through the lens of sound and new media. I am honored to share the stage with confirmed keynote speakers Steve Goodman (Kode9), Aura Satz, and Abbas Zahedi, whose pioneering work in sonic warfare, preemptive listening, and ecological grief powerfully aligns with the conference's urgent themes.

The "Urgencies" edition positions listening as a critical form of attention and a means to engage with contemporary challenges. My presentation contributes to this dialogue by examining how human-machine collaboration in art can reflect and critique our technologically mediated reality.

Conference Details:
  • Title: Explorations on Sound and New Media Art Conference: Urgencies

Hugo Paquete to Present "Sonic Sabotage" at the VII International IDEA Congress 2025

Hugo Paquete's provocative research proposal, "Sonic Sabotage: AI as a Disobedient Instrument in Post-Operatic Performance," has been officially accepted for presentation at the VII International IDEA Congress, organized by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cuenca, Ecuador.

Hugo will present his research virtually (synchronous mode) during the congress, which takes place from December 1 to 3, 2025. The presentation will consist of a 15-minute talk followed by a 5-minute Q&A session, allowing for direct engagement with the international academic community.

This research critically examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping sound and performance arts, using his groundbreaking meta-opera project, "Negentropy: The Last Man in the Wasteland" (2024), as a central case study. Situated at the intersection of post-techno aesthetics and glitch theory, the work repurposes deepfake technology not for replication, but as a speculative tool of resistance. It directly challenges the aesthetic standardization imposed by algorithmic governance.

The project articulates an unstable acoustic ecology where collapse and excess act as deliberate compositional engines. This is achieved through an integrated system featuring:
  • An AI-generated libretto.
  • Real-time improvisation.
  • CO₂ modulation activated by biosensors.

Advancing a "negentropic epistemology," the research champions unpredictability and dissonance as vital agents for reclaiming sonic agency. It proposes a pathway toward "post-optimized" futures, pushing beyond the confines of platform capitalism and emotional engineering.

This presentation is developed through Hugo Paquete's affiliations with iAlab Sensoria (Universidade da Beira Interior) and the independent platform Absonus Lab, reflecting his ongoing commitment to interdisciplinary research at the frontiers of art, technology, and critical theory.

We look forward to sharing this exploration of AI-driven artistic disobedience at this international forum.

Rhythms of the Subatomic Landscapes" Curated for the CMMR 2025 Sounding Future 3D AudioSpace

Hugo Paquete's immersive acousmatic work, "Rhythms of the Subatomic Landscapes," has been officially selected and curated for the Sounding Future 3D AudioSpace. This platform is a featured event of the prestigious 17th International Symposium on Computer Music Multidisciplinary Research (CMMR 2025).

Hosted by University College London under the theme "Sound, Music: Space, Place," CMMR 2025 provides the perfect academic and artistic context for Paquete's groundbreaking piece. The symposium's focus on spatial audio and sonic environments aligns seamlessly with the core concepts of the composition.

"Rhythms of the Subatomic Landscapes" plunges the listener into a world where rhythm behaves not as a steady pulse, but as a dynamic, unstable, and complex system. Crafted through advanced algorithmic processes and granular synthesis at Absonus Lab, the piece builds immersive sonic environments where percussive traces flicker, swarm, and decay in a captivating dance of sound.

By drawing inspiration from post-techno's fascination with asymmetry and structural collapse, Paquete effectively co-composes with these unstable systems. The result is a listening experience that is both physically visceral and intellectually charged—a profound study of time, perception, and the politics of sound organization.

We invite you to experience this unique exploration of rhythm and space on the official curated platform.
